BUILD
Kinder - 1st BUILD Instruction. The BUILD program is a small-group early reading intervention designed by Scottish Rite for Children for kindergarten and first-grade students who are struggling or at risk for dyslexia. It serves as a structural precursor to advanced intervention curricula like Take Flight.
Core Components of BUILD:
The curriculum utilizes a direct, systematic, cumulative, and multisensory approach focusing on five essential areas:
Alphabet: Letter identification, sequencing, and alphabetizing skills.
Letter/Sound Knowledge: Direct instruction connecting individual letters to sounds before advancing to words and sentences.
Phonological Awareness: Explicit teaching spanning from rhyming to sound production and spelling.
Vocabulary: Direct strategy instruction using context clues for unfamiliar words.
Comprehension: Explicit learning strategies to identify basic story components.
Take Flight
Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia is a two-year, evidence-based structured literacy curriculum developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children in Dallas, Texas. It is designed for students aged 7 and older to improve reading fluency, decoding, and comprehension.
Core Components of Take Flight:
Phonemic Awareness: Systematic study of speech sounds and mouth placement.
Phonics: Explicit instruction covering 44 English sounds and 96 letter-sound rules.
Vocabulary & Morphology: Learning 87 affixes, root words, and etymology.
Fluency: Guided and timed repeated readings of words and texts.
Comprehension: Strategies for understanding narrative and expository text.
